Edin Dzeko Announces End of Bosnia and Herzegovina Career

Edin Dzeko has announced he will retire from international football, saying his final match for Bosnia and Herzegovina will be played against Sweden on October 2. The veteran striker revealed the decision in a post on social media, describing how he had sometimes wondered when the farewell would come.

What Dzeko said

In his message Dzeko reflected on the emotional weight of the moment and the pride he felt wearing the national shirt. He wrote that on October 2, against Sweden, he will play his next and last match for the national team.

Across a long international career he collected 151 caps and stressed that nothing in his professional life could match the pride of representing his country on the pitch. He called wearing the jersey a childhood dream that accompanied him through every one of those 151 appearances.

Dzeko also looked back to his first appearance, against Turkey, nearly two decades ago and singled out Bosnia and Herzegovina's qualification for the 2014 World Cup as one of his happiest moments as a player.

He recalled the emotions after his goal against Wales and the March match in Zenica against Italy, saying those memories and the sight of fans celebrating in the streets will remain with him forever. Dzeko invited supporters to join him at the farewell game against Sweden so they could share one more emotional night together.

He closed his post by saying he wanted his last night in the national jersey to be with the fans beside him, wearing the shirt he loved since childhood and will love until the end of his life.
