A shooting at a Halloween costume and decorations shop in downtown Fairfield, California late on Friday left one person dead and six others wounded, Fairfield police said.
The department said the incident took place at a store that sells costumes and Halloween decorations in the Solano downtown area of Fairfield. Authorities said a single suspect was involved but provided no further details.
FBI joins local investigators
The FBI’s Sacramento office posted on X that it was deploying an evidence response team to assist the Fairfield Police Department. Police reported that all seven victims sustained gunshot wounds, including the person who died.
Six survivors were transported to hospitals for treatment; at least three of them were in critical condition, according to the police statement issued around midnight early Saturday. Detectives were interviewing witnesses and working to identify the suspect.
"This is still a very active crime scene. Detectives are speaking with witnesses and are diligently working to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting," the police statement said.
The Solano downtown area — which the police said includes about 130 shops and restaurants — remained open on Saturday, but officials canceled a planned Halloween event in the wake of the shooting. Fairfield is about 60 kilometres southwest of Sacramento.
