EU Commission: Serbia election result opens possibility for progress toward EU

At a Brussels press briefing, a European Commission spokesperson said the outcome of the elections in Serbia creates an opportunity for the country to make progress on its path toward European Union membership.

"Serbia belongs to the European family and we will work with the future Serbian government in the same way we work with any other democratically elected government," the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson stressed that the Commission is prepared to cooperate with the next Serbian government to support reforms in areas including the rule of law, media freedom, the fight against corruption and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

He also confirmed that the Commission is ready to publish next week the progress reports for all EU candidate countries, a routine step in the accession process that evaluates reform efforts and sets benchmarks.

The comments in Brussels frame the election result as a potential opening for renewed engagement between EU institutions and Belgrade on Serbia's accession agenda.

Commission officials said the EU will continue to monitor developments and engage constructively with Serbian authorities to advance the accession process.
