Stephan El Shaarawy returns to Genoa

Veteran forward Stephan El Shaarawy has returned to Genoa, rejoining the club where he came through as a youngster. The move was announced on 3 September 2026 and makes El Shaarawy a new member of the team he represented between 2008 and 2010.

From boyhood club to a long pro career and back

El Shaarawy went on to build a high-profile career in Italy and abroad. After leaving Genoa he spent spells at Padova and then established himself during a long period with Roma, before representing top clubs such as Milan and AS Monaco and also playing in China.

Known for his attacking instinct, El Shaarawy has also been part of the Italy national team, for which he made 32 appearances and scored seven goals.

Genoa are bringing back a familiar face with extensive experience in Serie A and international football. Supporters will expect the veteran to add depth and know-how to the squad as the club navigates the current season.

The move closes the loop on a career that began in Genoa’s youth ranks and now returns to the city where El Shaarawy first broke into senior football.
