Elversberg stun Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 in Bundesliga opener

SV Elversberg produced the shock result of the Bundesliga opening weekend on 29 August 2026, beating Bayer Leverkusen 3:2 in front of their home fans in what was the promoted club’s first-ever match and victory in Germany’s top flight.

The hosts began the game explosively: Elversberg were 2-0 up inside nine minutes, then extended the lead after half-time when David Mokwa scored in the 46th minute to make it an astonishing 3-0.

Bayer staged a late fightback. Patrik Schick pulled one back in the 77th minute and Christian Koffane added a second for the visitors in stoppage time, but the comeback fell short and Elversberg held on for the historic win.

Leipzig win comfortably, other opening fixtures

RB Leipzig also opened the new Bundesliga season with a clear victory, defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3:0 at home — a statement win that underlines Leipzig’s ambition to compete near the top of German football again this year.

Other results from the opening round included:

  • Union Berlin – Eintracht Frankfurt 3:3
  • Mainz – Paderborn 0:0
  • Cologne – Hoffenheim 3:2

The shock in Elversberg and Leipzig’s convincing start set an intriguing tone for the 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign.
