Apple delays smart glasses over privacy concerns

Apple has pushed back the debut of its long‑rumored smart glasses, not because engineers can’t build the device but because the company wants to resolve privacy questions that could determine its success.

Journalist Mark Gurman has flagged the delay and says Apple is intent on delivering stronger privacy protections than competing products before taking the glasses to market.

Engineering trade‑offs focus on preventing misuse

Rather than rushing into a race with other technology firms, Apple is reportedly slowing development to devise ways that cameras and AI functions won’t undermine trust for wearers and people around them. Engineers face a larger challenge in preventing potential misuse than in creating the hardware itself.

Among the ideas under consideration are systems that would automatically block recording when attempts are made to tamper with a camera‑active indicator, and even a version of the product without a conventional camera. Another option would rely on sensors for environmental recognition and AI features while disabling photo and video capture altogether.

Apple’s caution follows the rollout of AI‑equipped smart glasses by Meta, which have already spurred debate about whether bystanders can tell when they are being recorded.

The launch window has been moved to 2027. Early plans called for an earlier unveiling, but Apple now appears to be aiming for a presentation at WWDC 2027 with sales potentially beginning later that year.

If the company succeeds in securing user trust, the glasses could join the Apple Watch and Vision Pro as one of Apple’s most significant product steps in recent years.
