The geriatric ward at the Zafir Sajto Home for the Elderly in Kumanovo will be renovated and equipped with funds provided by the European Union through a cross‑border cooperation project with Vranje, Republic of Serbia.

Project scope and partners

The initiative, titled "Bridging Borders – Together for Tomorrow," is a partnership between the two residential institutions and two non‑governmental organisations: Poraka Nasha from Kumanovo and an Educational Centre from Leskovac.

The total project budget is 402.336 euros, of which 85 percent is covered by the European Union. The funds will support reconstruction works at the Kumanovo home and upgrades at the Centre for the Advancement of Social Protection in Vranje, along with activities aimed at improving beneficiaries' quality of life. The project is planned to run for 24 months.

For the Kumanovo home specifically, nearly 100.000 euros have been earmarked for renovating and equipping the geriatric ward, covering structural work and new furnishings and medical aids.

The municipal council has approved 27 new hires for the Zafir Sajto Home; those appointments are pending the consent of the Ministry of Finance.

Local managers say the upgrades are intended to raise standards of care and create better conditions for long‑term residents, while cross‑border cooperation will also enable exchange of professional experience between staff from both institutions.
