EU warns of energy price crisis linked to war with Iran

The European Union is facing an energy price crisis driven by the fallout from the war with Iran, the EU's energy commissioner warned in a letter to the bloc's energy ministers, and called on member states to consider measures to cut energy demand.
Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen wrote that disruptions on oil and gas markets linked to the conflict are raising the risk of a sharp rise in prices across the Union.
"We face a price crisis that is connected to a supply crisis," Jørgensen wrote, urging ministers to assess demand-side actions.
Pressure to prepare for the coming winter
Jørgensen noted that the EU is better prepared now than it was in the winter of 2021, when Russia restricted gas supplies to Europe by reducing deliveries, but stressed that governments still need to strengthen preparations for the upcoming winter.
In his letter he urged national authorities to review and consider potential measures to lower energy consumption, stressing the need for coordinated and timely action to reduce risks to markets and consumers ahead of the colder months.
