EU to provide €710 million for communities affected by crises, mainly in Africa

The European Union will allocate €710 million to assist communities affected by crises, natural disasters or conflicts, primarily in Africa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Von der Leyen said the funding responds to a wave of humanitarian needs driven by multiple pressures. "Conflicts, extreme weather events and the rising cost of living are disrupting the lives of many people around the world," she said.
How the package is divided
About €380 million will be directed to the Sub-Saharan Africa region to finance migration-related actions aimed at protecting vulnerable migrants and supporting voluntary return and reintegration. The overall package also includes €252 million for immediate support to people and communities affected by conflict, displacement, epidemics and natural disasters.
The €252 million is earmarked as follows: €97 million for people in Sub-Saharan Africa, €103 million for the Palestinian territories and Lebanon, and €52 million for Ukraine to help communities prepare for the coming winter.
"Thanks to this support, we will support displaced communities across Africa, as well as the communities that receive them," von der Leyen added, underscoring the dual aim of assisting both displaced populations and host communities.
