EuroLeague threatens suspension — ASVEL must pay €1.2 million
EuroLeague demands ASVEL pay around €1.2 million for failing to meet the minimum salary amount in the 2025/26 season; the club risks a ban on registering players for 2026/27.
The French basketball club ASVEL has come under threat from the EuroLeague after financial stability checks revealed that the club spent less on player salaries in the 2025/26 season than the minimum required by the competitive balance rules, and now, according to calculations, must make up around €1.2 million.
Under the rules of EuroLeague's financial control system, the difference between the salaries actually paid and the prescribed minimum amount must be distributed among all players who were officially registered for the club last season. If ASVEL does not settle the debt, it may be prevented from registering players and coaches for the 2026/27 season until it fulfills its financial obligations.
This notice worsens what was already a chaotic summer transfer window for the club: a budget revision was previously required after ASVEL announced several solid signings, and then it also lost Sylvain Francisco, who moved to Panathinaikos.
New signings also in doubt
The fate of the other summer signings is highly uncertain. Departures of newly arrived stars have been reported, and among the names mentioned as potential departures are Armoni Brooks, Nick Weiler-Babb, Daniel Theis and others.
The club president, Tony Parker, previously admitted that, due to the changed financial situation, ASVEL will have to make tough decisions regarding the team's composition.
The club now faces a deadline to settle its financial obligations and convince EuroLeague's controllers that it can meet the conditions; otherwise administrative measures could make it difficult for it to register and renew the roster for the 2026/27 season.
