European Front asks for an inquiry commission into incident involving Ivan Stoilkovic
European Front asks the Assembly to form an inquiry commission after the event in which, they claim, a government member insulted MPs.
A group of MPs from the European Front submitted a draft decision to the Assembly to form an inquiry commission with the aim of establishing all facts and circumstances related to the serious incident that occurred within the premises of the Assembly, in which, they state, a member of the government used insulting and humiliating language toward the MPs.
The statement also notes that DUI (Democratic Union for Integration) will submit a request for an inquiry commission concerning the Minister of Local Self-Government, Ivan Stoilkovic.
What the commission should determine
According to the proposal, the inquiry commission should review the chronology of the event, the behavior of all persons involved, the actions of the institutions and the services of the Assembly, as well as determine whether the dignity of the Assembly, the rights of the MPs and the principles of transparency, accountability and the rule of law were violated.
"The Assembly is the highest representative body of the citizens and the foundational pillar of parliamentary democracy. It should be a space for democratic dialogue, institutional respect and parliamentary culture. Any behavior that undermines the dignity of MPs and the authority of the Assembly constitutes a direct attack on democratic institutions and must not remain without political and institutional responsibility," the European Front said in the statement.
They point out that the refusal to allow access to recordings from the Assembly’s official video surveillance system is also an especially important issue. "Given that the incident occurred while public duties were being performed and involves state officials, there is a clear public interest for all relevant evidence to be subject to institutional review. Therefore, the inquiry commission should also determine whether this refusal was in accordance with the law, the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly and standards of institutional transparency," the Front said.
"The full clarification of this case serves to restore citizens' trust in democratic institutions and to ensure European standards of public accountability. Therefore, we call on all MPs, regardless of political affiliation, to support this initiative. Voting to form the inquiry commission is not a vote for a political subject, but a vote for transparency, truth, accountability and the protection of the authority of the Assembly," the European Front added.
The protection of personal data shielded Stoilkovic from public embarrassment.
