Filipche: Constitutional amendments remain a condition

Five days before Independence Day, the opposition Social Democratic Union (SDSM) held a party event dedicated to the role of the country's first president, Kiro Gligorov. The gathering highlighted Gligorov's contribution to peaceful statehood and the survival of the country during turbulent times.
Filipche urges difficult choices as constitutional talks continue
The party leader, Filipche, emphasized that Gligorov's state-building approach should serve as a guide today, particularly as North Macedonia pursues EU integration. He framed the current debate over constitutional amendments as central to that process.
Speaking at the event, Filipche delivered a blunt message about the trade-offs facing the country: "Constitutional amendments remain a condition; we may be angry at Europe, but we must be responsible and make difficult decisions," he said.
He called on party members and the public to accept responsibility during the negotiation process, arguing that the constitutional changes are a prerequisite for North Macedonia to continue on the European path.
The remarks come amid ongoing discussions in domestic politics about how to reconcile national concerns with the conditions set by EU interlocutors. Filipche framed his appeal as one that places the long-term national interest above immediate sentiments.
