FIVB proposes winter national-team calendar; Euro 2028 may move to December
FIVB proposal would add a winter representative window; clubs — especially in Italy — and Polish officials express concerns.
On September 11, 2026 the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) advanced a proposal that would shift the national-team calendar so it no longer sits only in the summer months but also covers a winter window. Under the plan, major representative events could take place in late November and December — a period that currently overlaps with many club seasons.
Key points of the proposal
The most controversial element is the possibility that flagship competitions, including continental championships, would be staged at the end of the year. That scenario has already provoked strong resistance, particularly from Italian clubs, which warn that pausing domestic leagues for national-team tournaments would create logistical problems and could increase players' injury risk.
Sebastian Świderski, president of the Polish Volleyball Federation, confirmed that talks about the change are under way and stressed that clubs must be involved in the process. He said discussions have started, and that stakeholder input is necessary to shape any final decision.
Poland’s head coach Nikola Grbić likewise voiced reservations, expressing doubt that the proposed model would actually deliver more protection and rest for players.
If the reform is approved, the new calendar would be introduced after the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. That means the 2028 European Championship could be played according to the revised schedule, placing it potentially in the November–December window.
FIVB and national federations are expected to continue consultations in the coming months so that clubs, coaches and players can evaluate concrete formats and timing before any formal change is ratified.
