Flavio Bolsonaro travels to United States after election loss; passports annulled

Brazilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro left the country and travelled to the United States after losing the presidential election on Sunday and failing to comply with an order from the Supreme Court to surrender his passports, two sources said.

Background and legal step

Bolsonaro had been considered a frontrunner after leading in the first round of voting, but ultimately lost to the incumbent president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Authorities last night gave him 24 hours to hand over his travel documents as part of a money laundering probe; that deadline has now expired and his passports were subsequently annulled.

The move to cancel his passports removes his official travel credentials, while his departure for the United States raises immediate questions about enforcement of the court order and the next legal steps in the investigation.

There has been no public announcement from Bolsonaro's office or from Brazilian judicial authorities detailing the travel arrangements or the legal measures that will follow the annulment of the documents.
