Flick on Rodri's Barcelona arrival: “He raises the level of every player” — deal until mid-2030
Flick commented after FC Barcelona confirmed the signing of Rodri from Manchester City on 18 August, with a deal running until mid-2030.

Hansi Flick spoke publicly after the arrival of Rodri, the Ballon d'Or winner for 2024, to FC Barcelona. The club announced the signing from Manchester City on Tuesday, 18 August; the contract runs until mid-2030.
“Of course, it was a great opportunity for us to sign him and everyone was 100% convinced of it because he is a fantastic player. He also brings something special to every team and for me it was great to sign him, or more precisely it's great that he is here now.
I think he is probably the best defensive midfielder. He can control the game, but he is also an excellent defender. He is great in aerial duels, which is key for us. And of course he raises the level of every player,” Flick said.
Flick's assessment and Barcelona's plans
Flick highlighted the mix of defensive strength and game control that Rodri provides — qualities the coach described as immediately useful to Barcelona's tactical setup. The emphasis on aerial ability and defensive presence underlines why the club moved to complete the transfer.
Barcelona secured the signing on 18 August and presented Rodri as a long-term reinforcement, with the contract stretching to the middle of 2030. Flick framed the move as both a rare opportunity and a statement of intent by the club to strengthen its spine.
The coach added that the Spaniard's arrival should lift the whole squad during training and competition as Barcelona prepare for the remainder of the season.
