Flick: We created many chances but, sadly, scored only two

Barcelona collected a second straight La Liga win at the start of the season by beating Athletic Bilbao 2–0 on August 28, 2026, but head coach Hansi Flick warned there is room to improve in front of goal.

Flick praised the team’s attacking intent while noting the inefficiency that kept the scoreline modest despite numerous chances.

Flick on the performance

Speaking after the match, the Barcelona coach said: "We have a clear idea to play much more offensive football. We played an excellent match and created many chances, but unfortunately we only scored two goals. Sometimes we need to be a bit calmer on the pitch and play a little more in combination with our teammates."

Flick defended his decision to use Rafinha as the central striker and highlighted the Brazilian’s qualities.

"When I plan the match, I really think he can be our best No. 9. He is a player of exceptional quality — the intensity he brings, the goals he scores and the dynamism he has are simply incredible," Flick said.

The coach reserved his highest praise for young Chavi Espart, whose tactical maturity stood out during the game.

"I greatly appreciate what I see from him. The fact that he can play equally well on the left wing surprises me. He is always fully focused on his tasks, and tactically he is simply excellent. I am extremely pleased with his development; he really is a top player," Flick concluded.
