Health Insurance Fund: 1,883 IVF requests in a year — 237 for fourth to sixth attempts

The Health Insurance Fund reported that between 7 August 2025 and 20 August 2026 it reviewed 1,883 requests for biomedically assisted fertilization (BAF); 237 of those applications sought a fourth, fifth or sixth attempt, showing families are using the newly expanded entitlement.

Fund expands access and eases procedures

According to the Fund, of the 237 requests for later attempts, 216 were for a fourth attempt, 17 for a fifth attempt and 4 for a sixth attempt. The Fund said these cases represent families who have gained an additional opportunity where state support previously ended.

In addition to allowing up to six attempts covered by the Fund, the Fund introduced electronic delivery of approval notices, extended the deadline for filing objections from 8 to 15 days, and removed the requirement for an additional referral from a primary-care gynecologist.

Procedures were carried out in eight contracted public and private health institutions, and in 2025 the Fund paid more than 97.3 million denars for BAF treatments.

Commenting on the changes, the Fund said: "The health system cannot by itself change demographic trends, but it can provide more opportunities and ensure that financial barriers are not the reason a family must give up on trying to have children prematurely. It is not just about an amendment to one article of a law or an additional voucher. It is about one more chance for hope to become life."

The Fund emphasized that extending the entitlement to six attempts has become a real option that beneficiaries are using, not only a legal possibility.
