Gadi Eizenkot: Significant progress in talks to form Israel's next government

Gadi Eizenkot, an opposition politician in Israel, announced today that talks to secure a parliamentary majority after the recent elections have advanced significantly and that he hopes the president will task him with forming the next government.

Negotiations intensify amid hope for a mandate

Eizenkot said the process has included numerous meetings with different actors across the political spectrum. He signalled that several of those meetings took place very recently as negotiators pushed to close outstanding gaps.

In a post on the social network X, Eizenkot wrote: "Many meetings were held. Some were public, others private. Some of them took place only a few hours ago. We have made significant progress and achieved decisive breakthroughs."

The statement did not list which parties or figures were involved, nor did it give a timetable for when the president might formally grant a mandate. Political analysts say that coalition talks in Israel can move quickly once key concessions are resolved.

Observers will be watching whether the president follows through and assigns Eizenkot the mandate to try to build a governing coalition, a step that would set the next phase of negotiations and parliamentary maneuvering in motion.
