Gjorge Džekov ahead of debut: defence, aggression and approach will be decisive against Switzerland

Gjorge Džekov is preparing for his first appearance with North Macedonia’s senior team as the country opens a new Nations League cycle at home against Switzerland on Saturday, 26 September 2026 at the Todor Proeski National Arena in Skopje.
The fixture starts a compact run of matches for coach Goce Sedloski’s squad: an away trip to Slovenia on 29 September, a home game with Scotland on 3 October, and a return match against Switzerland on 6 October in Lucerne.
Asked about his first call-up and the upcoming challenge, Džekov underlined his excitement and respect for the opposition. “It’s an honor and a pleasure to be part of our A national team for the first time. We know what kind of opponent we'll face on Saturday. Switzerland is an excellent team, a World Cup quarter-finalist, with many quality players,” he said.
Focus and approach
Džekov expects a tough contest but believes a disciplined collective effort can produce a positive result. He stressed the importance of the team’s organisation and mentality ahead of the opener.
“It’s up to us to meet the coaching staff's expectations and give our maximum on the pitch. In my view, the defense, aggressiveness and approach to the game will be key to achieving a positive result against Switzerland, and against the other teams as well,” Džekov added.
With his senior debut looming, the young midfielder will be one to watch as North Macedonia seeks a strong start in League B of the Nations League.
