Novak Djokovic proposes radical overhaul of tennis scoring
Djokovic told a podcast he wants sets to finish at four games, possible removal of advantage at deuce, and matches limited to roughly two hours.

Novak Djokovic on 04.08.2026 again stirred the debate over how tennis matches are scored by proposing a radical change to the traditional format.
Shorter sets, no ‘advantage’ and matches capped at two hours
Speaking on a basketball podcast hosted by Niko Kutrakos, Djokovic was asked a provocative question about what version of tennis he would defend at all costs. He answered with a clear, structural proposal for the sport.
Djokovic explained his idea in detail: "I think tennis needs a new scoring system; sets should not be played to six games. I believe one set should be played to four games, with a possible removal of the 'advantage' rule at 40:40. Matches would be played until someone wins three such shortened sets. That way, matches would not last longer than two hours, which, in my view, is best for everyone."
The Serbian champion framed the proposal as both a fan- and player-oriented change: shorter, more predictable match lengths and fewer marathon encounters. He argued the adjustment would modernize the sport’s appeal while keeping competitive balance.
Djokovic’s suggestion adds to a long-running conversation in tennis about format tweaks aimed at television schedules and player welfare. Whether tournament organisers, players’ bodies and fans will embrace a move from traditional six-game sets to four-game sets remains an open question.
