Orce Gjorgievski: Market enforcement to continue, no tolerance for street vendors

Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgievski announced that the city’s campaign to remove unauthorised street stalls and restore order at markets will continue across all Skopje municipalities, and that there will be no tolerance for informal sellers using sidewalks and bike paths.

Joint controls and seized food

Speaking while inspecting construction work on the bridge at Ljubljanska Street in Karpoš, Gjorgievski said market vendors must use designated spaces inside markets rather than selling on boulevards, sidewalks or pedestrian and bicycle lanes. He stressed the enforcement actions are joint operations by the City of Skopje, the Inspection, the Agency for Food and Veterinary and the Ministry of Interior.

Referring to a recent operation at Bit-pazar, Gjorgievski said about 500 kilograms of food were confiscated. He added that similar checks are under way in the Kisela Voda and Centar municipalities and reiterated that authorities will not tolerate these practices.

Authorities also removed informal stalls along the route from Mavrovka to Bit-pazar; the Agency for Food and Veterinary seized roughly half a ton of food during those actions.

On other infrastructure projects, Gjorgievski said the glassed counter-hall at the Post Office is currently having its roof renovated with investment from the Government via the Ministry of Transport; the space will be repurposed for youth as part of the "Skopje – Capital of Culture" project.

He added that work on the General Mihajlo Apostolski bridge in Gazi Baba has secured the first section of the route by demolishing obstructing structures, and that from Monday crews will begin installing curbs and connections to the access streets. Gjorgievski called the bridge the city’s second major capital project and named Boris Trajkovski Boulevard as a third, with construction expected to finish before New Year. He also said the General Urban Plan for Skopje is being worked on intensively and that details will be shared with the public as they become available.
