Orce Gjorgievski announces large Skopje cleanup, to be held twice a month
The "Generalka Weekend 2026" will cover all Skopje municipalities and, the mayor says, will be repeated twice a month to build a lasting habit.
Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgievski announced a large citywide cleanup set to begin tomorrow at 10:00, calling on thousands of volunteers and municipal leaders to take part in what he described as the biggest environmental action so far.
The initiative, named "Generalka Weekend 2026," will involve all municipalities in Skopje and, according to the mayor's post, will bring together municipal mayors, embassy representatives, pupils, public figures, athletes and ordinary citizens.
Mayor: turn civic pride into action
Gjorgievski urged residents to join and to invite family, neighbours and colleagues to help clean streets, parks and neighbourhoods. In his message he said: "The goal is to show how much we can do when we are united and when the love for our city is turned into action! We will show shared care for the city everywhere, because every neighbourhood deserves a clean and orderly environment. I call on everyone who loves this city to be part of the action. Invite your friends, neighbours, colleagues. Let us roll up our sleeves and together take care of the streets we use every day, the parks where our children grow, and the neighbourhoods we call home."
Gjorgievski also announced that these cleanups will be held twice a month, and he expressed the expectation that the initiative will become a lasting tradition for Skopje.
He added: "Let us create a habit that will last beyond each event. Let us teach the youngest responsibility through our actions, and to anyone who thoughtlessly throws waste show that behind a clean Skopje stand thousands of people who care, work and will not give up on their city! Only united can we raise awareness and make care for public space our everyday habit. Let this action be the beginning of a beautiful change that we will all see, and that we will all protect!"
The mayor recently said the municipality is proceeding with plans to install cameras in public areas to detect and sanction those who improperly dispose of waste more quickly.
