Major Shift in Ukrainian Military: Mykhailo Drapatyi Takes Charge Following Syrskyi's Dismissal

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are getting new leadership after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy decided to replace the current commander-in-chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi. Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi has been appointed in his place. This move comes during a period of heightened tensions and mass protests across the country, which were sparked by the recent dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

According to Zelenskyy's statements, the decision to reorganize the General Staff was made after a series of consultations with the military leadership. He did not fail to acknowledge Syrskyi for his past merits, particularly highlighting his role in the defense of the capital, the offensive actions in Kharkiv, and the operations in Kursk. The president emphasized that the ultimate goal remains the same – defeating the enemy and creating conditions for a just peace through continuous pressure on Russia.

The new commander-in-chief, Mykhailo Drapatyi, is well-known in military circles and commands great respect among civil activists. His military career has seen significant moments since 2014, when as a major he participated in the battles for Mariupol. Recently, he successfully led the Joint Forces in the Kharkiv region, where Ukrainian troops managed to regain control over territories around Kupiansk.

Interestingly, Drapatyi publicly supported former minister Fedorov, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms in the army. He recently pointed out that changes are necessary, but they must be fair to the soldiers who bear the burden of the war every day. According to him, staying silent about problems only leads to their accumulation, which ultimately costs lost time and human lives. Meanwhile, the dismissed minister Fedorov rejected an offer to return to his position.
