Grand Prix for Lysistrata; Skopje Drama Theatre wins three Stobi awards
Tosa Jovanović Theatre’s Lysistrata won the festival Grand Prix; Skopje Drama Theatre earned directing and leading-actor/actress prizes.
Theatre Tosa Jovanović from Zrenjanin, Serbia won the Grand Prix at the Festival of Ancient Drama "Stobi" for its production of Lysistrata.
Skopje Drama Theatre's production The Fall of Masada took three prizes: Best Director for Dejan Projkovski, Best Leading Actress for Jelena Žugić, and Best Leading Actor for Aleksandar Stepanuleski.
The festival jury, which included actors Vesna Bobevski, Keti Borisovska and Pece Ristevski, announced the awards after its deliberations.
Jury on Lysistrata
In its written decision, jury member Vesna Bobevski praised the Serbian staging: "The production 'Lysistrata', directed by Nikola Zavišić, is a complete theatrical triumph that transforms the ancient text into a contemporary, explosive language. The ensemble produces a brilliant reversal in which the role of Lysistrata is carried by all the actresses on stage. The production offers impeccable stage imagery."
The festival highlighted both the international presence at Stobi and the strong showing by home theatre productions in the programme's competitive categories.
