Greek tanker Skyros attacked in Black Sea after loading Russian oil

A Greek-operated oil tanker was attacked in the Black Sea yesterday after loading cargo originating from Russia, sources with knowledge of the incident said.

The vessel Skyros, a Suezmax-class tanker capable of carrying around one million barrels of oil, was struck after taking on cargo at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal near the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. The company that manages the ship said there were no injuries or oil leaks but declined to comment further.

This episode is the first attack on a ship arriving at the CPC terminal after a nearly three-week pause.

Earlier, Kyiv agreed to halt attacks on tankers using the CPC terminal after U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop such strikes during a July 31 phone call.

Russia and Kazakhstan last month condemned, as they described, Ukrainian drone attacks on vessels loading oil at the CPC maritime terminal. Kyiv has in some cases acknowledged such strikes, arguing that attacks on Russian energy infrastructure are intended to deprive Moscow of funds to finance the war in Ukraine.

The incident highlights ongoing risks to maritime oil shipments in the Black Sea and the continued tensions surrounding energy exports from Russian ports.
