Harry Kane wins 2026 Ballon d'Or — Mbappé 28 points behind

The 2026 Ballon d'Or results were unveiled in London on October 30, with Harry Kane crowned the winner after a razor-thin count. Kane finished the voting on 1,055 points, edging out Kylian Mbappé by just 28 points — one of the tightest margins in the award's history.

The gap between first and second this year is the fourth-smallest ever recorded for the prize. Kane collected 40 first-place votes while Mbappé received 23, underlining how divided the 100-member jury was in the final tally.

For Kane, the prize has several historic notes: he is the first Englishman to win the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001, and the first Bayern Munich player to lift the trophy since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. The ceremony took place in London, where the gala was held this year.

Organisers explain: "The Ballon d'Or is awarded by an international jury of 100 specialist journalists, with one representative from each country."

Final 2026 standings (top 10)

  • 1. Harry Kane (England, Bayern Munich) — 1,055 points.
  • 2. Kylian Mbappé (France, Real Madrid) — 1,027 points.
  • 3. Lamine Yamal (Spain, FC Barcelona) — 881 points.
  • 4. Rodri (Spain, Manchester City, FC Barcelona from August 2026) — 726 points.
  • 5. Lionel Messi (Argentina, Inter Miami) — 612 points.
  • 6. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Georgia, Paris Saint-Germain) — 541 points.
  • 7. Ousmane Dembélé (France, Paris Saint-Germain) — 418 points.
  • 8. Erling Haaland (Norway, Manchester City) — 378 points.
  • 9. Michael Olise (France, Bayern Munich) — 296 points.
  • 10. Fabián Ruiz (Spain, Paris Saint-Germain) — 201 points.

The narrow finish crystallised into a portrait of two contrasting careers this season: Kane, the proven goalscorer who moved to Bayern Munich, and Mbappé, the superstar at Real Madrid who remained close behind in the voting. The Ballon d'Or jury — a panel of 100 journalists, one from each country — delivered one of the most competitive ballots in recent memory.
