Netherlands withdraws support for Gianni Infantino and calls for Amsterdam summit

On 31 August 2026 the Royal Dutch Football Association announced it has withdrawn its letter of confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino and called for broad institutional change at world football's governing body.

The Dutch federation said the organization needs not merely a new president but a substantial overhaul of how FIFA is run. It singled out the concentration of power in the hands of the president and urged a clearer separation between the presidential and administrative roles.

Key demands

The Netherlands proposed hosting an international summit in Amsterdam to discuss FIFA's future and set out a number of concrete demands: greater transparency, stronger oversight mechanisms, better protection of human rights and an explicit focus on sustainability.

Among the federation's central proposals is that new leadership take office in 2027. The Dutch also recommended that up to 90 percent of FIFA-distributed funds be reinvested into football development programs.

The move by the Dutch association adds to growing pressure on FIFA's leadership and sets the stage for a high-profile debate over governance, finance allocation and rights issues ahead of the proposed leadership change in 2027.
