Croatian government backs motion to start impeachment of Plenković; he calls it an 'opposition pamphlet'

The Croatian Government on Thursday approved an opposition-led proposal to open an impeachment procedure against Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and will forward the initiative to the Sabor.

Cabinet sends motion to Parliament

The move follows a request by 54 MPs who demand that Parliament examine Plenković's political responsibility over an alleged illegal waste dumping incident in Gospić, in the Lika region. The Sabor has 151 members; a simple majority is 76.

During the open part of the cabinet session, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković dismissed the initiative as an attempt by opponents to score political points and described it as an "opposition pamphlet."

"Regarding the government's statement about initiating the question of confidence, which was raised by 54 MPs, and regarding the situation in Gospić, we provided a detailed statement on the opposition's pamphlet, which is yet another in the series attempting to publish such initiatives," Plenković said.

The government and the opposition's initiative will now be formally submitted to the Croatian Parliament, where lawmakers are expected to debate the matter in the coming days.
