Julián Álvarez returns to Atlético Madrid group training

Atlético Madrid resumed training on August 30, 2026 following their win at the Sánchez-Pizjuán — and the biggest positive from the first session was the return of Julián Álvarez to group work.

The Argentine striker rejoined team training after two days of rest and a further two days working alone under an individualized programme. He had not trained with his teammates since the match against Villarreal at the Metropolitano and spent a difficult period before beginning to regain full fitness.

Return timed ahead of transfer-window deadline

Álvarez had been back on the grass on Friday in individual drills; after following a personalised plan over the last 48 hours, he was integrated into the full group session on Sunday. The comeback comes with only two days remaining before the transfer window closes and what has been a lengthy transfer saga nears its end.

Club officials appear keen to have their forward ready in case he stays at Atlético rather than leave before the deadline. Sporting director Mateu Alemany made the club's intentions clear at a press conference prior to the Sánchez-Pizjuán match: "We expect him to reintegrate quickly and be available for the next La Liga match."

A short video of Álvarez working with his teammates circulated on social media on August 30, 2026, underlining that, for now, he is training with the squad and could be considered for selection if the situation is resolved in time.
