Fernando Alonso signs new contract with Aston Martin, staying in F1 for 2027

Fernando Alonso will remain on the Formula 1 grid in 2027 after Aston Martin confirmed the Spanish two-time world champion has signed a new contract with the team. The announcement ends weeks of speculation over the 45-year-old’s future, after he had left open the possibility of either continuing or walking away from the sport.

A stable driver line-up for 2027

Aston Martin, who signed Alonso ahead of the 2023 season, said the deal keeps him in the team at least through the 2027 campaign, although the precise length of the contract has not been disclosed publicly. The team will run the same driver pairing next year after Lance Stroll also extended his agreement.

“Racing is my life, my passion and I know that I still have the speed and the determination to compete at the highest level,” Alonso said after putting pen to paper. The 45-year-old has suggested recently that he does not necessarily see 2027 as his final season in Formula 1.

Since joining Aston Martin in 2023 Alonso has scored eight podiums for the team. Across his entire career the Spaniard has collected 32 race victories and holds the record for 440 Grand Prix starts.

The new deal secures one of the most experienced drivers on the grid for at least another season, preserving continuity for Aston Martin as it seeks to build on recent progress in the constructors’ championship.
