Erling Haaland’s future if Manchester City are expelled from the Premier League

The possibility that Manchester City could face the harshest sanction after being accused on 114 of 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules has focused attention on the futures of the club’s top players, above all Erling Haaland.

Contract details and what they mean

Haaland signed a long-term extension in January 2025 that runs until the summer of 2034. That agreement does not contain a specific release clause that would be activated if the team were relegated or administratively expelled from the Premier League, so there is no automatic mechanism allowing him to leave the club as a free agent in that scenario.

In practice, that means Haaland would remain under contract to Manchester City even if the club were to play outside the Premier League, unless the club and player agree an alternative arrangement. He would not instantly become a free agent nor able to depart under a built‑in relegation clause.

British reporting indicates the deal is structured to give the Norwegian greater control over his future at certain points in the contract. If Haaland decided he wanted to leave, the first realistic window could open around the middle of the extended deal — roughly in 2030 — and transfer costs required to secure his signature are expected to decline progressively as the contract approaches its end.

The wider market consequences would depend on the final sanction and any appeals process. Any club wishing to sign Haaland while he remains under contract would need to negotiate with Manchester City, and legal developments or negotiated settlements between club and player could change the timing or terms of any move.

Until the Premier League case is resolved, Haaland’s future is largely governed by the terms he agreed in January 2025 and by whatever commercial and sporting compromises the parties are prepared to make.
