A lower‑league German football team has been shaken by a criminal investigation after a teammate died following a team picnic last year. Authorities say a 35‑year‑old semi‑professional player, identified as Marius T., was arrested on suspicion of poisoning his teammate Philipp M.
Arrest follows year‑long inquiry
The incident reportedly took place in Dresden during a friendly gathering; prosecutors say the suspect allegedly introduced a lethal substance into a fish dish. The arrest comes after an investigation that lasted around a year, local officials told reporters.
Police and prosecutors have described the case as unusual for German football, where violent crimes between players are extremely rare. According to the public statement, investigators believe the motive was personal—an act of revenge linked to a woman.
"We suspect that the motive for this was revenge. Murders by poisoning are very rare, which makes the whole case unusual. Based on the investigation so far, we are convinced that this is a murder," said district public prosecutor Thomas Hoberger.
Club officials and regional football authorities have not yet released a detailed comment on the arrest. The case is being handled by criminal investigators in Dresden and is expected to move into the charging phase pending forensic results and further inquiries.
