Elon Musk announces one SpaceX share for every child in the U.S.

American billionaire and SpaceX owner Elon Musk announced that next year he will give one share of the company to every child in the United States, but did not say how he would implement the plan.

According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, on July 1, 2025 there were about 72 million children under 18 living in the United States. The value of the shares Musk plans to give is about $10.5 billion, based on a price of $146.03 per share at the close of trading on Friday.

In a filing submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in August, Musk is listed as owning about 4.8 billion shares in SpaceX.

Context

The announcement came one day after Anthropic said it planned to set aside five percent of its shares for a new public interest fund, with the possibility that that stake could increase as the company grows.

Musk provided no details on the mechanism for transferring shares to millions of minors, leaving logistical, legal and tax questions unanswered.

Until Musk or the company provides further explanation, the timing and practical steps for the proposal remain unclear.
