Inspections find 118 buildings completely destroyed by wildfires in Greece
Ministry of Infrastructure inspections found 118 properties beyond repair after fires across West Attica, Crete and other regions.
Inspections of properties hit by the recent wildfires across parts of Greece have found that 118 buildings are completely destroyed and cannot be repaired, authorities said.
The Ministry of Infrastructure carried out checks on a total of 325 properties in affected areas including West Attica, Crete, Viotia, Achaia and Argolida on the Peloponnese, and Fokida in central Greece. Of those inspected, 118 — mostly in West Attica — were declared unsafe and will have to be demolished.
Inspectors determined that 119 buildings were damaged but can be repaired, while 88 properties were judged fit for habitation.
Damage in West Attica and Crete
In West Attica, 84 buildings were found to be completely destroyed, and 67 sustained damage that can be repaired. In the Rethymno area of Crete, where two firefighters died last week while fighting the blaze, inspectors checked 55 properties: 19 were declared completely destroyed and 12 can be rebuilt.
Additional assessments identified seven unsafe buildings in Viotia, six in Fokida and two in Argolida. Authorities said the full tally will guide decisions on demolitions, repairs and where temporary housing or other assistance is required.
Officials warned that recovery will take time as communities and local authorities coordinate clearing, rebuilding and support for affected families.
