Iskra Hadzi Vasileva elected to lead Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecution of Organized Crime and Corruption

Iskra Hadzi Vasileva has been chosen by her peers to lead the Public Prosecutor’s Office for the Prosecution of Organized Crime and Corruption. She said that, within two weeks after formally taking over the role from Islam Abazi, she will begin addressing organizational matters and launching effective criminal prosecutions set out in her programme.

The Council of Public Prosecutors is due to confirm her appointment on Thursday. After that she must take an oath; the current plan is for her to assume the post in mid-November.

Hadzi Vasileva told colleagues she intends to prioritise tangible results in high‑profile and complex cases, as well as the internal changes needed to support sustained investigative work.

Resistance to outside pressure

She also assured the public and prosecutors that she will remain resistant to pressures and external influences, presenting independence and rule of law as central commitments of her tenure.

The transition will see Hadzi Vasileva replace Islam Abazi as leader of the office; she said her first weeks will focus on setting the office’s operational priorities and implementing the measures from her programme.

Prosecutors and legal observers will watch the incoming leadership closely as the office prepares to take on prioritized cases and internal reforms under the new chief.
