Debar Maalo roundabout paved with asphalt after warped paving blocks were removed
Centar municipality removed warped paving blocks and asphalted the roundabout on Leninova during the street reconstruction.
The roundabout at the intersection of Orce Nikolov and Leninova streets in the Debar Maalo neighbourhood has been paved with asphalt after the removal of the distorted bekaton paving blocks that were causing problems for drivers.
Municipal authorities in Centar had earlier announced that the reconstruction of Leninova Street is entering its penultimate phase and that a second layer of asphalt will be laid on the section from Partizanski Odredi Boulevard to Ilindenska Street; the roundabout would be asphalted as part of these works. "This traffic solution will remain permanent, because it has proven successful in reducing the number of traffic accidents," the Municipality of Centar said.
Background and previous works
The roundabout was built as part of the widening and upgrade of Orce Nikolov Street, a project that introduced narrower bike lanes, new sidewalks and parking "pockets" intended for residents and for zoned parking.
However, the bekaton tiles on the circular junction failed to perform on that type of surface: they settled unevenly, forming waves and in places collapsing, which led to several visible deformations and made passage uncomfortable for vehicles. Residents complained and demanded that the municipality correct the defect.
After a series of announcements, the municipality removed the damaged paving blocks and covered the roundabout with asphalt. The surface is now level and cars can pass through smoothly, municipal crews say, and the change closes a recurring complaint from local drivers and residents.
