Janevska: For now there are no subsidies for intercity student transport
The minister said free intercity transport is not planned and that the Ministry is focusing on improving education and a new law for higher education.
The Ministry of Education and Science currently does not plan free or subsidized intercity transport for students, said Minister Vesna Janevska on 04 September 2026.
Janevska: free transport only where there are decisions
Responding to a journalist's question about students who travel daily from other towns to university centres and face higher transport costs, Janevska said that free transport is provided only where there are conditions and appropriate decisions. "They have free transport within the city. Intercity transport we have not planned at the moment," Janevska said while laying the foundation stone for a new sports hall.
The minister reminded that primary and secondary education in the country are free, and studying, as she stressed, is subject to minimal participation. "Studying is almost free, because we have a minimal participation fee in the country for studies. Students have opportunities to enroll at six state universities and, as I am informed, they choose those that suit them best," Janevska said.
According to her, the Ministry's priorities are now directed toward improving the quality of education, introducing single-shift and full-day schooling, changes in higher education curricula and preparing a new higher education law.
The event took place during the laying of the foundation stone for a new sports hall at Primary School "Bratstvo" in Karposh. The event was attended by the Prime Minister, Hristijan Mickoski, and the mayor of Karposh, Sotir Lukrovski.
Despite the ministry's message, student associations and municipal authorities point out that the rise in intercity ticket prices creates additional costs for students who commute daily and call for possible solutions to be considered.
