Jannik Sinner withdraws from Cincinnati Masters with knee problem
The Wimbledon champion — who hasn’t played since the London final — will miss Cincinnati because of knee problems; Carlos Alcaraz is also absent.
Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Masters, the Italian announced on August 9, 2026, citing persistent trouble with his knee.
Sinner, who has not played an official match since the Wimbledon final in London, recently visited a clinic in Milan for what was initially described as a routine check-up. The examination and further consultations led the 23-year-old to rule himself out of the second event on the US hard-court swing.
Carlos Alcaraz has also pulled out of Cincinnati, leaving two of the game's top names absent from the draw and increasing Novak Djokovic's chances of claiming a Masters title this season.
Implications for the U.S. hard-court swing
Djokovic has been preparing to travel to the United States from the Montenegrin coast, and was even seen attending a concert by Vlado Georgiev. With Sinner and Alcaraz missing, the field in Cincinnati will look notably different ahead of the US Open.
In a statement Sinner said: "After consultations with my doctors and team, I must announce my withdrawal from Cincinnati. My knee is bothering me, and no matter how hard we worked, I have to accept that I am still not ready. I am very disappointed that I will not be able to play in Cincinnati. I hope to come next year and am now focused on preparations for the US Open."
Sinner’s absence maintains uncertainty over his short-term schedule; his priority, he added, is recovery and targeted preparation for the US Open later this summer.
