Japan develops eco-friendly fireworks with water‑soluble shells

Japan has unveiled an eco‑friendly fireworks design whose outer casings dissolve in water, a development intended to cut the amount of litter that falls back to the ground after displays.

The new product was created by the Japanese company Kakinoki Fireworks together with an academic researcher: Professor Takahiko Nakaoka of Ryukoku University. The team says the shells contain a water‑soluble resin in their outer layers that allows remnants to break down rapidly after an explosion.

How the new shell works

Traditional aerial shells are built with layers of gunpowder inside an outer casing that bursts during the display and then falls back to earth. Conventional casings, typically made from kraft paper, can take about half a year to decompose. By contrast, the newly developed outer wrapping that incorporates a water‑soluble resin can degrade in just one day.

According to the project team, debris from a standard medium aerial shell (with a diameter of about 12 centimeters) can already break down by the following day thanks to the new wrapping. The developers hope this will reduce clean‑up costs and environmental impact after festivals and public events.

The company and university researchers plan further testing to confirm durability, safety and performance under different weather conditions before wider commercial rollout. If successful, the change could alter how public displays are staged, especially in areas where fallen pyrotechnic remnants are a recurring problem.
