Singer, songwriter and TV host Julija Macievska moved the audience to tears with the premiere of her new song "Andrijana Angel Nebesen" at the Leshok Folk Fest 2026.

Macievska appeared on stage in an elegant, tradition-meets-modern outfit in pale beige and blue, completed by wide, flowing sleeves that gave her a quietly angelic presence. She was joined by the "Vanja Lazarova" choir, whose voices reinforced the solemn atmosphere and amplified the emotional impact of her velvet, powerful delivery.

Premiere and creation

After the debut performance Julija shared a deeply personal account of how the piece was born: "The song came overnight, it tore out of my womb and the music and the lyrics. I knew I would sing a song for my Angel Andrijana, but I didn't know when exactly. I wanted it to come on its own, to flow from me like an avalanche, and so it happened. It took me four years for this majestic Angelic hymn to flow from me, which although it contains sorrow and grief from the veins of a mother's soul for her child, is nonetheless joyous, because it celebrates Life that continues into eternity."

Macievska signs both music and lyrics herself and publicly thanked maestro Cane Petrov for the arrangement and production, as well as festival directors Susana Spasovska and Borche Brzanov and the members of the "Vanja Lazarova" choir for their support during the premiere.

The song is dedicated to her daughter, the visual artist Andrijana Maciev, who died of cancer at the age of 41. Julija has spoken openly about that loss, describing the long and painful periods spent at the oncology clinic and the moral support she receives from her granddaughter Stefania.

Earlier in life Julija suffered another devastating loss when her first husband died suddenly at 34, leaving her alone with their two-year-old daughter. She once contemplated leaving music, but returned with the hit "Dajte mi dva otrova", a song that she says foreshadowed much of her later life.

Over the years Macievska has channelled personal grief into art, writing, exhibitions and humanitarian initiatives such as the fundraising campaign "Lyubov za site" (Love for All), demonstrating a persistent faith and a determination to transform pain into creative and charitable work.
