Kajla Kominovska (Kajla K.), a young Macedonian singer based in Melbourne, sent an emotional greeting to her compatriots on September 8 — North Macedonia’s Independence Day — with a home video dressed in a traditional folk costume.
Performance and message
In the footage shared on social media, Kominovska appears in an elaborate Macedonian national costume — embroidered shirt, vest and fusta, a necklace of white beads and a floral hair ornament — holding a microphone as she sings a patriotic folk song.
Her post carried the short message: "Happy holiday, Macedonia" and the piece she performed, the folk song "Ogan da go gori", struck a chord with thousands of Macedonians both in the homeland and in the diaspora, emphasizing themes of identity, history and the country’s name.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Kominovska will soon celebrate her 18th birthday. She recorded her first song at the age of 12 and has since focused exclusively on traditional Macedonian music, building a following for her distinctive vocal color and expressive delivery.
Fans and admirers online often call her "the new Vaska Ilieva", a comparison pointing to her role in keeping Macedonian folk traditions alive far from the homeland.
