How to survive a scorching summer without air conditioning — clever tricks from our grandparents

When the thermometer climbs to 40°C, air conditioners feel indispensable — but decades of household wisdom show there are many low-cost, effective alternatives. These methods combine timing, airflow management and simple evaporative cooling to keep rooms and bodies comfortable without running a wall unit around the clock.

Practical, low-energy cooling the old-fashioned way

Start with timing: keep windows and shutters closed while the sun is highest and only open for fresh air in the cool hours of morning and night. This prevents the greenhouse effect inside your home and preserves the cooler air you managed to keep indoors.

Create cross-ventilation in the evening by opening windows and doors on opposite sides of the house — a deliberate draft will replace trapped heat quickly. With modern insect screens in place this can be left overnight without nuisance.

If you have a fan but it only blows warm air, try the frozen-bottle trick: fill plastic bottles with water to 80% and freeze them overnight. Place the frozen bottles on a tray in front of the running fan; as the ice melts it absorbs heat from the room and the fan spreads the cooled air several degrees wider than the ice alone would.

Other traditional techniques work on the same evaporative principle: hang damp cotton sheets or towels over open windows so hot air passing through them cools as moisture evaporates. Indoors, shallow bowls or pots with very cold water and ice will also lower local temperature when placed where airflow can pick up the chill.

Personal comfort relies as much on clothing and habits as on indoor temperature. Choose light cotton or linen and light colours so sweat can evaporate freely. Do heavy chores early in the morning and avoid using the oven during the heat; cold soups, salads and chilled drinks keep the body cool without adding to the indoor heat load.

To cool your body quickly, apply a cold wet cloth to the back of the neck or under the arms, or immerse your hands under cold running water up to the elbows — blood vessels are near the surface there and chilled blood helps you feel cooler fast.
