Canadian charged in Kumanovo over attempt to export cultural heritage sandstone fragment

The Regional Police Department Kumanovo filed a criminal complaint against Dzh.A.S. (37) from Canada on suspicion of illegally attempting to remove cultural property from the country.

Police say the incident involved a sandstone fragment

According to the complaint, on August 28, 2026 the suspect unlawfully acquired and appropriated a fragment of sandstone that constitutes cultural heritage, with the intent to take it out of the state without a permit from the competent authority.

The filing cites suspicion that the act falls under the criminal offence described as "exportation, i.e., exporting abroad of goods under temporary protection or cultural heritage or natural rarities".

Authorities in Kumanovo have launched procedures following the complaint; the case will be processed through the regular criminal-law channels and further investigative steps were announced by the police.

No additional information about possible sanctions or the current location of the recovered fragment was released by investigators.
