Casemiro made his Inter Miami debut in a 1-0 win over Montreal and spoke about finally lining up alongside Lionel Messi.
Carlos Henrique Casemiro left Europe after a 13-year spell and made his Inter Miami debut in a 1-0 win over Montreal, a match after which he reflected on finally becoming a teammate of Lionel Messi.
The 34-year-old defensive midfielder — who won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid after spells at Porto and Manchester United — said the Argentine had long been a formidable opponent and admitted he had always wanted to share a dressing room with the game's best.
"Messi caused me so many problems. Of course, I dreamed of playing with him. I have always wanted to be in the same team as the best. I could never stop him alone. I always needed help from my teammates," Casemiro told "ESPN".
New partnership in South Florida
Casemiro, who moved to Major League Soccer in the summer of 2026, described the importance of linking up with Messi at club level and voiced clear ambitions for immediate success.
"I am very happy to be with him now and I want to keep winning trophies with him. I want us to enjoy playing together, to help him and to contribute to his greatness. He is one of the gods of football – if not the very god of football – and I want to support him," wrote Messi Casemiro.
Coaches and supporters will look to Casemiro to add defensive stability in midfield while allowing Messi more freedom going forward; the combination of experience and superstar talent raises expectations for Inter Miami's upcoming fixtures in MLS and cup competitions.
