Kylian Mbappé cycles during recovery — Madrid debate Mourinho's warning

Kylian Mbappé has posted a short video of himself cycling as he continues to recover from the injury he suffered while playing for France on 25 September 2026, a clip that reignited debate in Madrid over player conduct and club control.

The forward, still listed as recovering after that international match against Turkey, shared the clip on his social networks days after the incident. Spanish media drew a connection between the footage and previous comments by José Mourinho about risky leisure activities for professional players.

About such behaviour Mourinho once said: "It is not just about contracts and what is written on paper, but about how you approach the work. The player should not ski or ride a bicycle because he can fall, get injured, break a leg or arm. Because of that, he can miss five or six matches, or even more."

Club tensions and public reactions

Madrid outlets argued that the video reinforced a narrative of poor fit between the star and his new club, suggesting Mbappé has been given latitude that fans and commentators now question. In one column a Madrid journalist even wrote that the Frenchman had become "toxic".

As one Madrid paper put it: "Whenever the question of Kylian Mbappé at Real Madrid is raised, the answers almost always lead to the same conclusion: he has permission from the club for everything he does. However, fans no longer believe such an explanation. Instead, there are more people who believe that the player has not fully integrated into Real Madrid, or that the club simply did not take him properly under its wing."

The clip was widely shared on social platforms on 4 October 2026 and has become a new flashpoint in ongoing discussions about how elite clubs balance player freedom, image and injury risk during recovery.
