Andrea Kimi Antonelli can clinch the title at the United States Grand Prix in Austin

Andrea Kimi Antonelli can clinch his first Formula 1 world title as soon as the United States Grand Prix in Texas on October 25, 2026, if a narrow set of results falls in his favour.

After finishing third in Singapore and taking 15 points, Antonelli extended his lead over teammate and nearest rival George Russell to 102 points; he now sits on 340 points in the championship standings.

What Antonelli needs in Austin

There are five race weekends remaining after the Texas round if the planned events in Qatar and Abu Dhabi are held, so Antonelli must be 125 points clear of his rivals after the United States Grand Prix on October 25 to secure the title immediately. A victory in Austin would add 25 points to his tally, but a win alone will not automatically clinch the championship.

If Antonelli wins, Russell would have to finish no higher than ninth and Lewis Hamilton — currently 111 points adrift of Antonelli — would need to finish fifth or lower for Antonelli to reach the 125-point margin. With eight wins to Russell's three, a 125-point lead combined with that superior number of victories would be enough to decide the championship in Antonelli's favour.

If Antonelli wins but Russell finishes eighth or better, the gap would be 123 points and the title fight would continue at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1. The same continuation would happen if Antonelli wins and Hamilton finishes fourth. If Antonelli finishes second or lower, Russell would carry the championship fight into Mexico; Hamilton would need at least seventh place in Austin to stay mathematically involved.

Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and reigning champion Lando Norris remain on the fringes: all trail by 139 points and therefore retain theoretical chances. Verstappen — on a run of two successive victories for Red Bull — cannot afford to lose six or more points to Antonelli. If Antonelli wins and Verstappen finishes second (a seven-point swing), the Dutch driver would be out of contention. Should Antonelli finish second, Verstappen must finish at least third to remain in the fight ahead of Mexico.

Should Antonelli secure the title this season he would become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history, breaking Sebastian Vettel's record from 2010 (Vettel was 23 years, four months and 11 days when he won). A title for the 20-year-old from Bologna would also bring Italy its first drivers' championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
