Borussia Dortmund's 19-year-old forward Konstantinos Karecas was taken to hospital after experiencing circulatory problems during the Champions League match against Villarreal at Signal Iduna Park on 9 September 2026.
In the 23rd minute Karecas suddenly went down to the pitch without contact from an opponent. The club's medical team attended him immediately; he was carried off on a stretcher and substituted by Ethan Nwaneri.
Club statement and immediate reaction
Borussia Dortmund issued a brief update saying Karecas is "in stable condition, all things considered," and that he was transported to hospital for additional medical examinations.
Fans at Signal Iduna Park applauded the young international as he left the field. The club said it is awaiting the results of the hospital tests before offering further information.
