Short storm floods underground garage in Strumica; retaining wall collapses and damages cars

A brief but intense downpour this afternoon flooded an underground parking garage in the centre of Strumica, city residents reported.

The storm — heavy rain combined with strong winds — lasted roughly 20 minutes and produced volumes of water that the municipal storm drains could not absorb, allowing water to flow into the garage.

So far there are no widespread damage reports. However, a retaining wall in the old part of the town gave way under the pressure of the water and collapsed, damaging several parked cars.

Authorities have not published a formal assessment at the time of writing, and it is not yet known whether the underground garage sustained structural damage beyond the flooding.

Local crews may need to inspect the affected sites and the drainage system to determine causes and next steps, but no official intervention details were available when this report was prepared.
