Cristiano Ronaldo suspended 30 days and fined €255

Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended from Portugal duty for 30 days and fined €255, the disciplinary committee of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has ruled after an inquiry into his departure from the national team camp on 30 September.

What led to the sanction

The decision followed a clash between Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus that drew wide public attention. Ronaldo remained on the bench for the entire 2-1 Nations League win over Norway despite being sent to warm up during the match; he later said the coach had promised him 30 minutes of playing time that did not materialize.

Tensions intensified ahead of Portugal's game with Denmark when Ronaldo said an agreement had been reached with the coach on a joint public statement explaining their relationship, but that Jesus did not honour that arrangement at a press conference. Dissatisfied, Ronaldo left the national team camp in Copenhagen and flew to Madrid on a private plane.

On 10 October the FPF opened disciplinary proceedings and imposed a provisional suspension. Under federation rules, leaving a national team gathering without justification can be punished with a suspension of between one and six months and a financial penalty.

Ronaldo later published a lengthy statement apologising to his teammates and the fans and accepting responsibility for his actions. "I have already apologized, but I know that actions have consequences. Anyone who is in football, like me, knows that the rules are the same for everyone, regardless of someone's status," Ronaldo said at the time.

Portuguese officials have warned that the provisional measure could affect his availability for November matches: Portugal faces Denmark on 14 November and Wales three days later. It remains unclear how the earlier provisional suspension will be factored into the final sanction, and whether Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus can repair their relationship.
