Kristin Vajgand: US-led war in Iran has killed 3,400 civilians and wounded over 33,000
The UN coordinator reported massive infrastructure damage and said a US strike on a Minab school on 28 February killed many children, teachers and parents.
UN Resident Coordinator in Iran Kristin Vajgand said on the ground that 30 of Iran's 31 provinces have been affected by the US-led war, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 3,400 civilians and left over 33,000 people wounded.
Speaking from Tehran to accredited United Nations journalists in Geneva, Vajgand described widespread damage to critical infrastructure across the country, including health facilities, desalination plants and power networks.
School attack in Minab and human cost
She referred to the US strike on the Minab school on 28 February and emphasized that a large number of children, teachers and parents were killed in that attack.
Vajgand said the conflict has not only cost lives but also destroyed livelihoods: many people have lost their main sources of income both because of direct military strikes and because of the wider economic consequences of the fighting.
After visiting areas hit by the attacks, she reported seeing everyday life deeply disrupted and said that many Iranians told her they are postponing important life decisions — professional and personal — because they do not know what will happen next.
Vajgand also noted that Iran has long faced multiple rounds of sanctions and that the country is now confronting a new round; she warned these measures have tangible effects on Iranians, UN partners and the organisation's work in the field.
